Numerous studies show that cycling can have a positive impact on mental health. From racing to taking a leisurely ride around the neighborhood, every pedal stroke can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety and even alleviate symptoms of depression.

The Benefits of Cycling: Mental Health Booster

Cycling offers both physical and mental health benefits and has been the topic of medical study for decades. While the impact varies by individual, intensity, duration and other factors, research consistently shows that cycling is a physically accessible way for adults and kids to feel better about themselves.  

1. Cycling Is Social

Plenty of cyclists ride solo, but it’s a sport that builds robust social networks in many communities. Team sports are considered the best for improving mental health, with cycling a close second. Cycling is also more accessible and flexible; friends can meet after school or work and ride anywhere convenient. Team sports are great, but they tend to require strict scheduling and infrastructure. You’ll never have to reserve your local trail or bike path for “practice.”

2. Cycling Reduces Anxiety

Any exercise is good, but cycling might be tops for reducing anxiety. One study found that cyclists who ride every day are 18% happier than those who used to ride and are forced to stop. That drop-off was the highest among the activities included in the study, though there was some variability based on the activity’s intensity.

3. Cycling Is a Proven Stress-reliever

Just thirty minutes of cycling each day can greatly reduce stress-related symptoms. A daily bike ride is a proven way to lower stress levels, especially among adults. While factors vary, riding for recreation or transportation can reduce financial stress (think gas or gym memberships) and help the body regulate cortisol levels.

4. Cycling Fits into Daily Life

If thirty minutes a day sounds like a lot, get creative with your schedule. Try commuting to work, running short errands or replacing your post-dinner TV binge with a quick spin around the neighborhood. Experiment with ways to make cycling a daily habit to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of cycling all the time!

5. Cycling for Sleep

It’s not all about improving your day-to-day. Many researchers recommend cycling for better sleep at night, improving quality and duration. Everyone is different, but it’s usually best to finish riding a few hours before bed to ensure your body has time to recover and relax.
