An investment in our youth and community

It was 2018, and I was in my second year as principal at Traverse Heights Elementary School. I was nervous about bringing Norte's Balance Bike Club (then known as Estrellas) into the gym for a session. I was curious to know what a balance bike was, and I scheduled it for one of our most high-energy preschool classes. So what was I in for?

After it started, the worry subsided. I was immediately struck by how empowering and enjoyable it was for the children. Balance Bike Club was a success. The students showed leadership, independence, and collaboration while riding. As a result, they felt happier and healthier. They continued the school year with purpose, confidence, and a stronger sense of community.

After seeing the program's positive impact, I had to get more involved. So I ended up serving as a volunteer board member. Now, three years later, Norte continues to inspire me with its focus and integrity. It's been an honor to invest my time in the organization. So how does Norte inspire you?

Students at Traverse Heights in 2018.

Whether you've participated in a slow roll, volunteered as a coach, or visited the bike valet at the farmer's market, you've experienced Norte as part of the community. Many of you have seen the joy on children's faces setting off for summer bike camp or competing in the annual balance bike race.

Norte is an essential investment in our youth and community, and the staff, volunteers, and board of directors work tirelessly to make it all possible. My three years haven't been without challenges. But, even during the pandemic and with leadership changes, Norte has continued to provide high-quality experiences and programs that help keep our communities happy, healthy, and strong.

As my term on the board of directors ends, my advocacy and support for Norte remain strong. However, the positive impact and results could only be possible by relying on the leadership and expertise of every staff member and all of you—the community that makes this work possible.

As 2022 comes to a close, I am thankful and hopeful that you'll join me in supporting the awesomeness of Norte in 2023!

Wishing you a happy and healthy new year,

Ryan Schrock
Board of Directors, 2019–2023

P.S. There are many ways you can help. Norte needs coaches, volunteers, bike donations, and your financial support. So, please join me. Let's keep 'em rolling!
