Catching Up with Will Unger
As Norte nears its ten-year anniversary, we’re reaching out to Norte alumni to catch up. Since 2014, we’ve had the privilege of meeting thousands of kids who have taken countless directions, but with shared memories and experiences on two wheels.
From Around the Block to the Big City
Will Unger first joined Norte in the Bike Mas days. On the very first day of practice at Eastern Elementary, Will was nervous. During our pre-ride snack break, Will was convinced he needed to tell his dad, Bill, he’d be late getting back to school. Will just knew there was no chance of riding from the school to East Bay Park (less than a mile away) and getting back in less than 90 minutes.
We made it back with plenty of time to spare.
From those early beginnings, Will grew into a confident cyclist and an exceptional leader in the community. He kept riding, ultimately becoming one of the strongest young riders in the area. But even more importantly, Will is a standout scholar and leader, traits that he attributes in some part to his participation at Norte.
Today, Will is a freshman at Columbia University in New York City, and we can’t wait to see where his talent, work ethic, and positive outlook take him.
How did Norte prepare you for life?
Norte gave me real-world, interactive opportunities to engage with my community in order to develop essential leadership skills. One example is the Hickory Hills MTB trail development that Norte supported in which I was the representative for the organization. This opportunity threw me to the wolves in the best way possible, forcing me to learn the skills necessary for civic projects while still having support from Norte's wonderful staff.
What lessons did you learn from Norte?
Norte's Liderato Youth Leadership Council and Varsity race team gave me countless opportunities to engage with real organizations and people in order to enact real change. Not only were these great resume builders, they were also wonderful experiences that shaped me into a responsible and hardworking adult. Moving on to college, I feel that I have a leg up on my classmates when doing projects in my classes because Norte has already provided me with the experience and skills necessary to interact with nonprofits, government officials, and the community.
What has been the most lasting impact Norte has had on you personally?
Norte is where I developed my work ethic. From training with the Varsity race team to working on community projects through the organization, I was infected by the passion of those around me, which has bled into various ventures outside of Norte. Their staff served as excellent role models of character, work ethic, and balance between fun and work!
For the Long Road Ahead
We are incredibly proud to have played a small role in shaping the next generation of leaders and all-around good humans like Will. You make it possible. Thank you for your continued support of Norte’s youth cycling programs and community events. Let’s keep it rolling!
